Get to Know the Traditional Musical Instruments of Nepal

Nepal, a land rich in culture and tradition, boasts a wide array of traditional musical instruments that have been an integral part of its heritage for generations. These handmade instruments are not only used in cultural ceremonies, but they also play a significant role in weddings, festivals, rituals, and various other culturally significant events. In this article, weโ€™ll take you on a journey to explore the traditional musical instruments of Nepal that resonate with the countryโ€™s cultural prosperity.

Sahanai

The Sahanai is a short, slightly curved pipe-like instrument with six small holes used to produce diverse melodies. Playing it requires a continuous flow of breath. The musician holds the tin base with a small pipe to their mouth, and the slightly opened top produces captivating music.

Narasingha

Narasingha is a long, curved pipe instrument, measuring about 3-4 meters in length, and it is blown from the bottom. Its upper part resembles a horn, which creates mesmerizing music.

Dholaki

The Dholaki is played using both hands, with one hand holding a stick and the other playing bare-handed. Thin leather strips are attached to the instrument, adding unique tonal qualities.

Jhurma/Jhyali

Jhurma or Jhyali is a set of two round discs that are struck together to produce enchanting sounds. These discs are often used in wedding ceremonies, with larger plates for grand occasions and smaller discs for other ritual ceremonies.

Tyamko

Tyamko is a smaller-sized instrument with a leather-surfaced drum that is played with two sticks, creating sharp and captivating music. A larger version of the Tyamko, known as Damaha, is used for different occasions.
