Gyaling The Monk Flute/Sanai/Shehnai Traditional Instruments

The gyaling, also known as the “monk flute,” is a traditional woodwind instrument used in Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhist music. It is a double-reed instrument similar to the Chinese suona horn, but with a narrower bore and a distinctively nasal tone.

Like the gyaling, it is a double-reed instrument with a wooden body and a metal bell. However, the suona has a wider bore than the gyaling, which gives it a louder and more raucous sound. The suona is often used in Chinese folk music and is a popular instrument in weddings and other celebrations.

Both the gyaling and suona are used in Buddhist music for their ability to generate positive spiritual energy and create a connection between the player and the divine. They are often played in ensembles with other traditional instruments such as cymbals, drums, and horns.
