Gyaling The Monk Flute/Sanai/Shehnai Traditional Instruments

The gyaling, also known as the “monk flute,” is a traditional woodwind instrument used in Nepalese and Tibetan Buddhist music. It is a double-reed instrument similar to the Chinese suona horn, but with a narrower bore and a distinctively nasal tone.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the gyaling is often used during puja (ritual worship) and other religious ceremonies as an offering to deities and a means of generating positive spiritual energy. It is associated with peaceful deities and the idea of devotion.

The gyaling has a seasoned hard wooden body with a metal bell and a double reed mouthpiece. The reeds are made of cane or bamboo and are attached to a metal tube that is inserted into the instrument’s body. The player creates sound by blowing air into the mouthpiece and controlling the pitch and volume by covering and uncovering the finger holes on the body of the instrument. The gyaling has a distinctively nasal and penetrating tone that is often described as haunting or otherworldly.

The suona horn, which is similar in appearance to the gyaling, is a traditional Chinese instrument also used in Buddhist music. Like the gyaling, it is a double-reed instrument with a wooden body and a metal bell. However, the suona has a wider bore than the gyaling, which gives it a louder and more raucous sound. The suona is often used in Chinese folk music and is a popular instrument in weddings and other celebrations.

Both the gyaling and suona are used in Buddhist music for their ability to generate positive spiritual energy and create a connection between the player and the divine. They are often played in ensembles with other traditional instruments such as cymbals, drums, and horns.
