Introducing the Enigmatic Octobass: A Rare Marvel in the World of Music

At Nepal Music Gallery, we are dedicated to exploring the wondrous world of musical instruments, and today, we are thrilled to introduce you to a true marvel – the Octobass. Crafted in Paris in the mid-19th century by the master luthier Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, this exceptional instrument is a true rarity, capturing the essence of innovation and creativity in the realm of music.

A Glimpse into the Extraordinary Octobass

The Octobass, as the name suggests, is not your typical instrument. It is essentially an enlarged version of the double bass, designed with three massive strings. The specimen showcased at the Musée de la Musique in Paris stands at an astounding 3.48 meters (11 feet 5 inches) in length, dwarfing the average full-size double bass, which measures approximately 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches).

A Musical Marvel: Challenges and Innovations

Playing the Octobass is a unique experience, necessitating a specialized system of levers and pedals. Given its extreme fingerboard length and string thickness, these levers engage metal clamps positioned above the neck at precise locations. These clamps serve as fretting devices when the musician presses the levers, offering an unprecedented range of sounds and tonal possibilities.

A Rare Gem in the World of Music

While the Octobass may be a rare and unconventional instrument, it has certainly captured the fascination of musicians and composers alike. Renowned composer Hector Berlioz was particularly taken with this instrument and advocated for its widespread adoption.

In the vast landscape of music, the Octobass makes a noteworthy appearance in Charles Gounod’s “Messe solennelle de Sainte-Cécile.” Within this magnificent composition, the Octobass is featured in the “Benedictus” and the “Agnus Dei,” adding a depth and resonance that is truly unique.
