Made from iguana skin stretched across a carved wooden shell, the Khaijadi drum produces a distinctive sound that is both rhythmic and melodic. The large size of the drum makes it perfect for accompanying traditional dances like chudka and kauda, which are performed by members of the Magar, Gurung, and other indigenous communities in Mid-Western Nepal during social activities.
Smaller versions of the Khaijadi drum are used by members of other ethnic groups, such as Brahmin and Chhetri, in devotional music known as bhajan. In other parts of Nepal, India, and Pakistan, frame drums like the khanjari, kanjira, and damphu are also used in devotional music traditions. Despite the differences in names and musical styles, these drums share a common history and cultural significance.
